First trip with the 5D Mark III. Feature-wise, this camera was a great upgrade from the Mark II. We didn’t arrive at the Grand Canyon until maybe an hour before sunset. With the angle that the sun was in perspective to the canyon, I was getting some pretty significant shadows along with some pretty harsh highlights toward the top of the canyon. So… I tried the HDR function and voila… not bad. I don’t even know how to do HDR on the computer, but what this camera does for you is sufficient enough for me. The Grand Canyon was pretty amazing, especially the next morning when we were driving along the south rim. Snow covered the upper elevations and it was absolutely beautiful. We froze our butts off but it was worth it.
One other handy piece of gear for this trip as the 16-35 f/2.8. For landscape shots, the barrel distortion is really difficult to distinguish so it really didn’t matter to me. But being able to capture the vastness of this place with one shot was really a nice thing to have.
