Time Machine advertises itself as able to backup external hard drives, which is exactly what I need because I store all my raw pictures and video on an external hard drive. However, after plugging in my external, Time Machine never picked it up. Turns out that that external hard drive needs to be formatted as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. I think I’d formatted it initially as NTFS.. i don’t remember. Sooo, luckily I have enough hard drive space to copy all the data from my external to my laptop, format the external, then copy everything back. It’s a little bit of a pain in the ass, but it’s all in the name of keeping these pictures and videos secure.

Just so you know, I will never refer to Kristine as “the fiancé” or “the wife” or “the Mrs.”.  I will refer to her by her name because she has a name.  

Please tell me why my package didn’t go straight from Houston to Austin. Why the hell is it in Laredo?!

Where the hell is my package going?

The phrase above basically sums up my existence at my job. There’s all sorts of important information that people have been storing in an Excel Spreadsheet and now, they have no easy way of extracting that data and/or connecting that data to other data sources.

In my continuing quest to figure out a better way to display a spreadsheet-like interface on a webpage, I found this article which was published a couple months ago.

It’s pretty much a roundup of all these different grid/spreadsheet javascript libraries which all have their pros and cons… I’m hoping to find something I can seriously use now. Something that will drastically reduce the load-time due to the number of DOM elements on these gigantic grids which my application is asked to handle.

Anyway, I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Just wanna give a shoutout to Rico’s new blog lovehandled.com. He asked me to get the domain name and set up wordpress on it, and it honestly took like 5 minutes. Dreamhost makes it unbelievably easy to do so.

I put smiley faces in my SVN repository commits in hopes that someone will find them in the future and be reminded to “have a nice day”.

I didn’t know you could write MySQL queries like this, but I just did:

In one of my recent projects, I’ve had to write a ton of recursive functions to iterate through tables whose foreign key references the same table. I’m sick of writing them, but I’ll have to say I’m pretty decent at writing them now.

I almost forgot about this, but I just found out about the Austin Javascript meetup… Thanks to @andyhite for the heads up. I’m pretty excited about meeting some people to discuss this stuff because I’ve been having some pretty bad issues with my applications which are heavily reliant on javascript. The bigger it gets, the slower it gets. Especially with pages that have an incredible amount of DOM elements. I’ll probably update after the meetup to talk about how it went
